Calcium formate is a complex enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of ammonium and formate to formic acid. It has been used as a biocompatible polymer in analytical methods, such as chromatography columns and ion-exchange resins. Calcium formate has shown inhibitory properties for energy metabolism in the bowel disease model system, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of matrix effect. The matrix effect is an accumulation of polymeric substances that create an environment that favors the proliferation of bacteria and other microbes. Formic acid is a metabolite of calcium formate and can be used to treat bowel diseases.
