Citronellal is a naturally occurring amine that has been shown to have high resistance to carbonyl groups and to act as an antibacterial agent. Citronellal inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their active site residues, which are the amino acid side chains on the enzyme's active site. It also binds to cuticular hydrocarbons, which are found in insect exoskeletons, and has synergic effects with other terpenes such as eugenol. Citronellal is produced from geranyl pyrophosphate via an enantioselective oxidation reaction catalyzed by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Citronellal can be used for clinical purposes such as treatment of wounds or prevention of bacterial infection in burn victims.
