Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug that interacts with the enzyme dihydropteridine reductase and inhibits the synthesis of the coenzyme, tetrahydrobiopterin. Colchicine also interacts with other drugs including lacosamide, a drug for epilepsy, and podophyllotoxin, an agent for warts. The interaction of colchicine with these drugs may lead to toxic effects or decreased efficacy. This interaction can be avoided by using pharmaceutical formulations that are free from colchicine and its active metabolites. An analytical methodology has been developed to detect impurities in colchicine preparations by analyzing their enantiomers.
