2-Chlorobutyric acid is an organic compound that is the product of the reaction between phosphorus pentachloride and hydrochloric acid. It can also be synthesized by reacting iodacetic acid with carbon dioxide in the presence of a base. The reaction yield for this organic compound is high and it has a low reactivity to water, making it useful as a solvent in industrial settings. 2-Chlorobutyric acid reacts with hydrogen ions to form carboxylate ions, which are then bonded to hydrogen atoms in a hydrogen bond. This process can also be reversed, forming carboxylic acids from 2-chlorobutyric acid. 2-Chlorobutyric acid is also used as a precursor to other organic compounds such as fluoroacetic acid and butyric acid.
