Chloromethane is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a pungent odor. It is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride plastics and resins, and as an intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals. Chloromethane enters wastewater treatment plants and reacts with hydrogen fluoride to produce hydrochloric acid and other compounds. The chloromethane-hydrogen fluoride reaction also produces toxic gases such as chlorine and phosgene, which are hazardous to human health.
Chloromethane is also an important chemical for biological studies because it can be converted into a variety of metabolic products that are unique to humans or animals, making it possible to study diseases that affect humans or animals without using human subjects. For example, chloromethane has been used to study kidney fibrosis by producing oxidative stress in rats.
