2-(4-Chlorophenyl)oxirane is a building block that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It can be prepared by electrochemical oxidation of 2,4-dichlorobenzene with ethylene diamine as an electron donor. 2-(4-Chlorophenyl)oxirane has been shown to bind to and inhibit bacterial enzymes, such as hydroxylases and oxidases. In addition, this compound has been found to be a potent inhibitor of phytoene desaturase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of phytoene into lycopene. This chemical has also been shown to inhibit the growth of recombinant cells in culture and can be used for immobilization purposes.br>br>The kinetic studies on 2-(4-chlorophenyl)oxirane have revealed that it reacts via a radical mechanism with strong electron withdrawing groups such as hydroxyl groups.
