4-(Chloromethyl)pyrimidine is a phosphorothioate that is used as an oral reagent and intraperitoneal ligand. It has been shown to have radioprotective effects in the presence of chloride anions. 4-(Chloromethyl)pyrimidine also binds to metal ions, such as iron and copper, and has been shown to be effective against intraperitoneal administration of chlorinated hydrocarbons. 4-(Chloromethyl)pyrimidine has also been used as a ligand in coordination chemistry. This compound belongs to the group of pyridines, which are organic compounds containing a six-membered ring with one nitrogen atom at the center.
