5-Chloropyridine-2,3-diol is a hydrogen bond donor that binds to DNA as a bidentate ligand. It has been shown to have constant and high binding affinity for the target site of influenza virus neuraminidase (NA) and to inhibit its enzymatic activity. 5-Chloropyridine-2,3-diol also inhibits the synthesis of viral RNA in infected cells by competitively inhibiting NA, which is essential for the release of progeny virus particles. This drug has clinical use in the treatment of influenza infections and has been used as an antiinfluenza drug since 2003. 5-Chloropyridine-2,3-diol is also used in fluorescence assays to detect changes in fluoroquinolone resistance of influenza A viruses.
