Description:

2-Benzyl-4-chlorophenol is a disinfectant that is used to treat skin cells and react with the surface of the skin. It has been shown to be toxic in laboratory animals at high doses. 2-Benzyl-4-chlorophenol is also used as an analytical reagent for detecting triclosan, which is an antimicrobial agent, and other substances. The reaction mechanism of 2-benzyl-4-chlorophenol is through a process called phenolic chlorination, which involves chlorinating benzene rings by oxidation. This reaction may occur at a faster rate in the presence of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), producing sodium chloride (NaCl) and hydrogen chloride gas (HCl).
