Chimanine D is an alkaloidal extract of the plant Chamaedorea seifritzii, which belongs to the family of palms. It is a potent inhibitor of leishmania parasites and has shown activity against cutaneous lesions in hamsters infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Chimanine D inhibits the growth of Leishmania infantum by inhibiting protein synthesis and exhibiting cytotoxic effects on macrophages. This compound binds reversibly to DNA and prevents transcription and replication by inhibiting bacterial RNA polymerase. The mechanism for this inhibition is not well understood, but it may involve DNA-protein interactions in the active site of bacterial RNA polymerase.
