Ceramides are a group of sphingolipid molecules that play an important role in the regulation of cellular function and lipid metabolism. They are composed of a long-chain fatty acid, which is attached to a sphingoid base via an amide linkage. Ceramides are hydrated at physiological conditions and have an acyl chain length between 16 and 24 carbons. They can be detected by mass spectrometry or microscopy. Ceramides have been shown to regulate cell function, such as apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, and migration. There is also evidence that ceramide levels are altered in cancer cells and this may contribute to their uncontrolled growth.
Ceramides can be classified as either atypical or typical based on the position of the fatty acid chain from the amide bond. Typical ceramides have the fatty acid in the trans configuration while atypical ceramides have the fatty acid in the cis configuration.
