Cotinine is a major metabolite of nicotine that can be detected in blood, saliva, and urine. It has been shown to bind to α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors with high affinity and it is used as a marker for nicotine exposure. Cotinine has been shown to reduce body weight and elevate locomotor activity in mice. The detection sensitivity of cotinine is higher than that of nicotine. It is also an analytical method that is used to detect the presence of cotinine in biological samples by using a mouse monoclonal antibody. This technique uses a matrix effect, which means that the sample preparation steps are done with the same chemistry as the analytical procedure. The detection limit for this procedure is 0.5 ng/mL.
