Ceramide is a fatty acid that is an important component of cell membranes. It has potent inducers of tumor metastases. Ceramide also regulates the function of cells by increasing the production of inflammatory proteins and decreasing the production of anti-inflammatory proteins. Ceramide can be found in many types of cells, including those with a low pH, such as cancer cells and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cells. This fatty acid is also found in high concentrations in certain tissues, such as the colon. The presence of ceramide has been linked to bowel diseases, such as IBD and cancerous growths. Ceramide can be used to help diagnose inflammatory diseases by measuring its levels in tissue samples using biochemical properties such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
