Ceramide is a lipid molecule that is a component of cell membranes. It is synthesized from the fatty acid chains and is known to be important in cellular physiology. Ceramide has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of squamous cancer cells, as well as increase epidermal growth factor-induced cell proliferation. It also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to decrease reactive oxygen species. Ceramide also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated production of nitric oxide in human lung fibroblasts.
