C22 dihydroceramide is a lipid that is produced by the liver and intestines. It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. C22 dihydroceramide has also been shown to promote autophagy and cellular respiration in cultured cells. This lipid has potential as a chemical analog for therapeutic purposes, such as cancer therapy or treatment of skin conditions such as xerosis (dry skin).
