C6-Ceramide is a lipid molecule that belongs to the group of sphingolipids and has been shown to induce apoptosis. C6-Ceramide induces apoptosis by activating the mitochondrial pathway, which leads to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and an increase in mitochondrial functions. The mitochondrial pathway activates the autophagy pathway, causing cellular death through autophagy. C6-Ceramide also inhibits cancer cell proliferation and survival by inhibiting cell signaling pathways, such as the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway. This drug has been shown to be effective against breast cancer cells and leukemia cells in vivo.
