Carbostyril is a coumarin derivative that exhibits antiviral and antifungal properties. It has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 replication in vitro and in vivo, as well as the replication of other retroviruses. Carbostyril has also been used for the treatment of eye disorders such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca and diabetic neuropathy. Fluorescence measurement can be used to determine the concentration of carbostyril in human serum samples. Carbostyril is activated by radiation or laser ablation, which can be used to kill cancer cells or destroy bacteria.
