Cefdinir is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is administered orally. It has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus pyogenes. Cefdinir binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, which prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Cefdinir has been shown to inhibit IL-2 receptor expression on T cells and zirconium oxide use in analytical methods. Cefdinir should not be used in patients who are taking drugs that can interact with it such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, or rifampin because these drugs may increase the risk of side effects from cefdinir.
