Ceratamine A is a benzimidazole derivative that has been shown to have anticancer activity in human liver and cervical cancer cells. Ceratamine A inhibits the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in these cancer cells by binding to the amide group of amino acid residues, preventing the nAChRs from opening. This leads to an increased level of acetylcholine, which activates the mcf-7 cells and induces apoptosis. Ceratamine A also inhibits bgc-823 growth by suppressing its DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. It has also been shown to be effective against rat liver microsomes with a higher affinity for unsaturated alkyl groups than saturated alkyl groups.
