- 6-Chloro-8-Methylquinoline
6-Chloro-8-methylquinoline is a chemical intermediate that can be used to produce drugs such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. The most common way to synthesize 6-chloro-8-methylquinoline is by the reaction of phosphorus pentachloride, hydrogen peroxide, and hydrochloric acid. This reaction produces chloroform, hydrogen chloride, and an intermediate called 8-methylquinoline. This intermediate is then treated with nitro groups to give the desired product. Other modifications of 6-chloro-8-methylquinoline include oxychloride, hydrolysis, sulfation, benzoylation, refluxing with stannous chloride, raney nickel catalyst at elevated temperatures in the presence of peroxide or phosphorus oxychloride.
