Chlorocitalopram is a citalopram analog that is synthesized by reacting citalopram with chloroacetic acid. Citalopram and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Chlorocitalopram has a lower affinity for binding to the serotonin transporter than citalopram and is less potent as an antidepressant. The synthesis of chlorocitalopram can be accomplished using solvents such as n-hexane, toluene, xylene, acetone, ether, or alcohol.
