(Chloromethyl)diphenylphosphine oxide is a gaseous substance that is used in the synthesis of metal complexes. It is made by reacting chloromethyl phenylphosphine with sodium metal in liquid ammonia. This compound can be used to prepare other transition metal complexes, such as those containing zinc and copper. (Chloromethyl)diphenylphosphine oxide is also a ligand for some transition metals, such as copper. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the reaction between nitric acid and chloride ion to form chlorine gas.
