1-Chlorophthalazine is an antimicrobial agent that can be used in diagnosis and analysis. It has been shown to be effective against a number of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The effective dose for 1-chlorophthalazine is typically less than 10 mg/L. One study showed that it was effective against cancer cells in vitro. It also inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). 1-Chlorophthalazine is synthesized from dimethylformamide by oxidative chlorination with hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid. This reaction generates hydrogen chloride gas, which will irritate the eyes and respiratory system if inhaled.
In addition to being used as an antimicrobial agent, 1-Chlorophthalazine can also be used as an analytical reagent for the detection of oxygen nucleophiles in organic solvents
