Chlorproguanil is a sulfa drug that is used to treat infectious diseases. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to an enzyme called dihydropteroate synthase, which is required for the production of folic acid. Chlorproguanil has been shown to be effective in treating autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and high-resistance infections in women. This drug binds strongly to human liver cells, making it difficult for chlorproguanil to be eliminated from the body. Chlorproguanil also interacts with hydrochloric acid and produces a coordination complex with copper ions, which may increase its stability in the body.
