Product Information

Name:
Ciprofloxacin N-oxide
Synonyms:
  • 1-Cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-7-(1-oxido-1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid
Description:

Ciprofloxacin N-oxide is a prodrug of ciprofloxacin, which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It has a pharmacokinetic profile that is similar to ciprofloxacin and can be used to treat bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin N-oxide is administered as an intravenous or intramuscular injection and is slowly hydrolyzed by plasma esterases in the liver to form ciprofloxacin. The prodrug has been shown to have an improved tissue penetration, with higher concentrations found in the brain and spinal cord than in the blood, when compared to ciprofloxacin. This may be due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively than its parent compound.
