Description

(1R,2R)-1,2-Cyclohexanedimethanol 1,2-dimethanesulfonate is an intermediate in the synthesis of a number of medicines. It is prepared by refluxing (1R,2R)-1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol with acetonitrile in the presence of potassium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. The product yield can be increased by adding an additional amount of acetonitrile and potassium carbonate to the reaction system. The product is purified by filtration and then further purified by recrystallization from water. Impurities are removed by reacting the residue with potassium carbonate in aqueous solution at room temperature. The transfer catalyst used for this process is usually either iron or titanium dioxide. This chemical has been shown to cause psychosis when inhaled.
