Cyclosporin A is a cyclic nonapeptide that is an immunosuppressant drug. Cyclosporin A inhibits the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and other cytokines by human lymphocytes, and has been shown to suppress graft-versus-host disease in rat hepatocyte cultures. Cyclosporin A is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to prostaglandins such as PGE2. Cyclosporine A also binds to specific antibodies, or immunoglobulins, that are found in the blood plasma. This binding prevents the cells from reacting with each other and initiating a chain reaction. Cyclosporin AM 1 is a dry extract of cyclosporine prepared by spray drying that maintains its chemical stability and its pharmaceutical activity over time. It can be used as a coating for tablets or capsules or incorporated into the chemical composition of other products
