3-Chlorotoluene is a chemical substance that has been shown to have bactericidal activity against a bacterial strain. It reacts with the hydroxyl group of the bacterial cell membrane, causing it to rupture and release cellular contents. This reaction is thought to be caused by hydrogen bonding interactions between the chlorine atom and the hydroxyl group of the cell membrane. 3-Chlorotoluene also causes mutations in bacteria, which may be due to its ability to react with DNA. The reaction mechanism for this chemical is unknown, but it is thought that viscosity may play a role in its bactericidal activity. 3-Chlorotoluene can also react with hydrogen fluoride (HF) or palladium complexes to form fluorescence techniques that are used in detection.
