Calpain inhibitor I is a small molecule that inhibits calpains by binding to the catalytic domain. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in treating bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, and other inflammatory conditions. Calpain inhibitor I has also been shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice with subcutaneous tumors. In addition, it may inhibit neuronal death and angiogenesis in the brain. This drug binds to calpains and inhibits their enzymatic activity, which prevents apoptosis of neurons.
