Chloroacetyl chloride (CAC) is a coumarin derivative that is used in the manufacture of fatty acids and as an oxidation catalyst. CAC has been shown to inhibit the growth of human carcinoma cells in vitro. This compound also has antimicrobial properties and can be used as an alternative to chlorine for wastewater treatment. Chloroacetyl chloride is oxidized by water vapor, phosphorus pentoxide, or chlorine to form chloroacetic acid, which can then be converted into acetic acid. CAC is also effective against infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.
