Colistin methanesulfonate sodium (CMS) is a form of colistin, a broad spectrum antibiotic, which has been extensively used to treat various bacterial infections and is resistant to the degradation by bacteria. CMS has been shown to have increased potency against Gram-negative bacteria and decreased toxicity in lower doses when compared with colistin sulfate. In addition, CMS enhances the effectiveness of other antibiotics that are used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. Colistin methanesulfonate sodium, similarly to colistin, decreases pulmonary bacterial biofilms and improves the activity of existing antibiotics against respiratory infections. CMS is also used as an antifungal agent.
