2-Chloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2CBEQ) is an electron acceptor that is used to measure the redox potential of chemical compounds. It is a stable and non-toxic compound that can be easily synthesized from methyl ethyl ketone and malonic acid. 2CBEQ has been shown to have high resistance to oxidation in biological systems. This compound has also been shown to induce apoptosis through the activation of nitrogen atoms in mouse tumor cells. 2CBEQ reacts with intracellular nucleophiles such as thiols, amines, or amino groups, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species and the generation of DNA damage. 2CBEQ binds with glutathione (GSH), which leads to depletion of GSH levels and increased activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
