N-(O-Chlorophenyl)maleimide (NCM) is an inhibitor of polymerization. It prevents the copolymerization of orthophosphoric acid with chloride ions, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of organisms. NCM is soluble in water and interacts with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The interaction between NCM and a surface is reversible and can be influenced by pH, temperature, and concentration. Maleic acid esters are used as stabilizers for NCM solutions.
N-(O-Chlorophenyl)maleimide is synthesized from chloranil or chlorobenzaldehyde by reacting with maleic anhydride in the presence of hydrochloric acid.
