Description:
4-Chloro-1,8-naphthalic anhydride is a synthetic chemical substance that has been used as a photoinitiator in photopolymerization. It is used in the synthesis of polymers and dyes, and as a fluorophore for fluorescence detection. 4-Chloro-1,8-naphthalic anhydride is also known to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the DNA duplexes and hydrogen bonding with the nucleophilic groups on the DNA bases. Some studies have shown that 4-chloro-1,8 naphthalic anhydride can be taken up into cells through passive diffusion and metabolized in vivo by ammonolysis or simple hydrolysis reactions. The molecule fluoresces when excited by light of appropriate wavelength, which makes it useful for fluorescent labeling of biomolecules.
