Description:

N-Carbethoxyphthalimide is a chemical compound that has the molecular formula CHNO. It is a white solid with a melting point of 143-144 °C. It reacts with an acid to form sodium salts, which are soluble in water. The reaction mechanism is nucleophilic attack by the carbonyl group on the electrophilic carbon atom in the salt. The second-order rate constant of this reaction is 4.5 × 10−3 M−1s−1 at 25 °C and pH 7. N-Carbethoxyphthalimide also reacts with piperazine in acidic conditions to form an intermediate that decomposes into hydrogen chloride gas and ammonia gas. This product can be used as a raw material for other organic compounds such as acrylamide and methacrylic acid, or it can be used as an intermediate for pesticides such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
