3-Cyano-6-methyl-2-(1H)-pyridinone is a supermolecule that spontaneously forms in the absence of any template. It has been shown to have anti-bacterial activity against many Gram-positive bacteria. 3-Cyano-6-methyl-2-(1H)-pyridinone inhibits the formation of benzothiadiazole, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of phenazine. The compound has been shown to inhibit benzothiadiazole pathways in bacterial cells and also inhibits the formation of beta sheets, which are important for architecture, coordination and orientation. 3-Cyano-6-methyl-2-(1H)-pyridinone has a square planar structure and can form multidimensional architectures when coordinated with metals such as copper, zinc and nickel.
