2,4,6-Cycloheptatriene-1-carbonitrile (CPT) is a potent and selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A. It is used in the preparation of molecular ions as kinetic energy enhances the ionization process. CPT has been shown to be an endogenous metabolite of cyclohexanedione, a compound that is involved in the synthesis of dopamine. CPT inhibits the breakdown of dopamine by inhibiting monoamine oxidase A and has been shown to have potentiation effects on dopamine release from nerve endings in vitro. This drug also has acidic hydrolysis properties which may result in an accumulation of CPT in vivo with repeated dosing.
