3-Chlorocyclohexene is a method for the chlorination of hydrocarbons with chlorine. This efficient method has been used to prepare 4-chlorocyclohexene, which can be oxidized to 3-chlorocyclohexene. The reaction vessel must be activated and deuterium isotope effect should be taken into account when determining the amount of chlorine necessary in the experiment. The oxidation products are found in a sample preparation that includes hydrogen chloride, which reacts with chlorine gas to form hydrochloric acid.
