Citrazinic acid is a hydroxylated compound that belongs to the class of antimicrobial agents. It reacts with sodium citrate to form a redox reaction solution. Citrazinic acid has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid and inhibit the binding of inhibitor molecules in a reaction mechanism that involves an intermediate, pyridine-2-carboxylic acid. The chemical structure of citrazinic acid contains a hydroxyl group that can be deprotonated and protonated, which leads to tautomers. Citrazinic acid has a high thermal expansion coefficient and can be used as a plasticizer.
