4-Chlorobenzoic anhydride is an efficient method for the conversion of fatty acids to their corresponding esters. This reaction is accomplished by mixing a chlorinating agent with a metal chloride, such as ethyl bromoacetate and hydrochloric acid, in the presence of an organic solvent. The reaction mechanism is believed to be through a nucleophilic substitution reaction at the carbonyl carbon atom of the fatty acid ester. The rate of this reaction depends on the concentration and temperature of all reactants. 4-Chlorobenzoic anhydride can be used in cross-coupling reactions with electron-deficient alkenes, such as ethyl bromoacetate, to form new molecules. This process can be used to synthesize functionalized molecules that are not available by other methods.
