Cyclopropanecarboxylic acid anhydride is a depressant that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression. It is a structural analog to other depressants, such as amitriptyline and doxepin. Cyclopropanecarboxylic acid anhydride binds to tyrosine kinase receptors and modulates their activity. It also inhibits the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of monoamines, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. This drug is structurally similar to hydroxylated phenethylamines such as amphetamine and methamphetamine, but has a much lower potency in comparison. The ethyl group on the left side of the molecule makes it more lipophilic than other compounds with hydroxyl groups on this side (such as amitriptyline).
