Cobalt phthalocyanine is a model system used to study redox potentials, kinetic data and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It has been found to have a linear calibration curve for nitrite ion, which can be used for the detection of nitrite ions in biological samples. Cobalt phthalocyanine has also been shown to be an optical sensor that can detect the presence of malonic acid in cell nuclei. This material is resistant to degradation by oxygen and light, making it a good candidate for use as an electrode in electrochemistry.
