4-Chloro-5-(2,3-dichlorophenoxy)-2-nitroaniline is an organic solvent that is used as a methylating agent. It is soluble in water and hydrolyzes rapidly in the presence of acid or base to form methylbenzene and nitrite ions. The reaction yield can be increased by using catalytic amounts of metal sulfate or carbon disulfide. 4-Chloro-5-(2,3-dichlorophenoxy)-2-nitroaniline is not toxic to humans but it has been shown to cause environmental pollution when released into soil or water. This chemical has been shown to have mutagenic effects on calf thymus DNA but not bacterial DNA. It also causes a decrease in the synthesis of RNA and protein in bacteria.
