Cbz-L-hydroxyproline is a hydroxylated amino acid that is used in the process of DNA synthesis. It is also an intermediate for the synthesis of peptides, which are molecules that are synthesized by cells and play a role in cellular functions. Cbz-L-hydroxyproline is produced from proline through the action of a synthetase enzyme and can be modified to form other functional groups. The addition of chloroformate changes the functional group to a carboxylic acid, which has been shown to have increased uptake into mammalian cells. This modification also increases its ability to bind with nucleic acids and proteins, making it useful for hybridization experiments. Cbz-L-hydroxyproline has been immobilized on a solid support for use in chemical reactions and as an affinity probe for RNA or DNA.
