2-Cyano-3-methylpyridine is a chemical compound that can be synthesized from hydrochloric acid, which is obtained from the reaction of hydrogen chloride and sulfuric acid. 2-Cyano-3-methylpyridine is used to synthesize a variety of other chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and solvents. One way to make this compound is by the thermolysis of pyridine with phosphorus pentoxide in the presence of water. This process produces chlorine gas as an unwanted byproduct.
