5-Chloro-2-hydroxynicotinic acid is a metabolite of nicotinic acid that has been isolated from cultures of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Pseudomonas sp. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme chloride ion pump, which leads to accumulation of chloride ions in the cell. This accumulation inhibits the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, as well as other cellular processes. 5-Chloro-2-hydroxynicotinic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of various bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
