4-Chlorophenyl glyoxal hydrate is a high yielding and reusable synthetic compound that is used as an antibacterial agent. It has a variety of amines and methoxy groups, which are important for its antibacterial activity. 4-Chlorophenyl glyoxal hydrate is synthesised from nitrobenzene and glyoxal in the presence of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. The yield of this synthesis can be increased by recycling the reactants. 4-Chlorophenyl glyoxal hydrate has been shown to have strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Enterococcus faecalis.
