D-Cystine is a non-essential amino acid that is an important source of sulfur for the body. It is also an important cofactor in a number of enzymes and proteins. Cysteine is synthesized from methionine by the enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase, which converts methionine to homocysteine and cysteine. The conversion of methionine to cysteine occurs in the liver and kidneys, whereas the conversion of homocysteine to cysteine occurs mainly in the liver. Cysteines can be oxidized by reacting with hydrogen peroxide, leading to formation of sulfinic acid or sulfonic acid. D-Cystine has been shown to have neuroprotective effects against glutamate toxicity and neuronal death due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress. It also has been shown to have transcriptional activity as a redox sensor that regulates gene expression through reductive activation of transcription factors such as nuclear factor eryth
