Cefbuperazone is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of penicillin-type beta-lactam antibiotics. It is used for treatment of bacterial infections, particularly in people with a history of penicillin allergy. Cefbuperazone inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins, which are located on the outer membrane of bacteria and help them resist phagocytosis. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with cell wall synthesis enzymes necessary for bacterial growth and division. Cefbuperazone is not active against Gram-negative bacteria such as E coli K12, but it does have some activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
