2-Chloro-5-hydroxy-3-methylpyridine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist that binds to the receptor and stimulates the release of acetylcholine. It is also able to inhibit the binding of nicotine to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which may have potential as a smoking cessation drug. The 2-chloro-5-hydroxy-3-methylpyridine molecule was found to bind with high affinity to rat brain receptors, but not to receptors in other organs such as liver or muscle. This may indicate that it has a higher risk for adverse side effects compared to other drugs.
